Day 8 - Further Implications

Plan
Bell Ringer! - solving for variables/averaging/percentages

Lesson
  1. Now that we have data, what do we do next? - Further Implications
  2. Ask a question that is related to the data.
  3. Research that question.
  4. Be sure to use reputable sources.
  5. Look into further implications.
  6. Create a presentation based on your research.
  7. Email the draft of the presentation to me.
  8. Include, in the email, everyone that is in the group.

Students created charts and analyzed their data last week and next on the agenda is finding the further implications of it. The students were put into their data groups and were given the task of coming up with a question for further implications of their data. Students had some trouble with coming up with questions. I offered some of the following questions to guide students a bit.
  1. Based on current obesity trends, what does the future look like? How was it in the past?
  2. Why is this obesity trend happening? What can be done?
  3. Why does it data matter? Is it a problem? How big of a problem is this?
  4. Are there any differences based on the location of the states? What could account for this?
  5. How does the U.S. compare to other countries? If there are differences, why?
  6. What is criteria for being obese?
  7. Are there any regional trends? How do diets differ by region? Are there some states that have more fast food places than others?
Having the students in their groups helped a lot. The leaders offered a great assistance to the students that needed and provided with the opportunity to help other students. What I plan to do better next time is have students come up with some questions as a class before setting them off into their groups.
